California pepper trees whispered and palm fronds softly rustled in a breeze fragrant with jasmine.
Behind the house, the patio lacked furniture.
A stuccoed property wall and Indian laurels screened the back of the house from the neighbors.
Even in daylight, she would not have been seen.
No cooking utensils were in sight.
No designer china waited to be admired on the shelves of those few upper cabinets that featured display windows.
She passed through spacious rooms as dark as closed caskets and devoid of furniture.
