‘The megalodon is kind of like a great white on steroids.’

ButThe Megimagines a world in which these gigantic predators are not only surviving, but THRIVING.

So much for fun in the sun, right?

THE MEG

Warner Bros. Pictures

Right… but its hardly realistic.

They were in temperate zones and essentially became extinct when the water became too cold for them.

If you think about it too, there cant just be like two megalodons in the ocean.

How would they be able to find each other, procreate, etc.?

Obviously, there would have to be quite a few of them.

Youd think we would have at least seen signs of something, right?

Like whales with giant bites out of them.

Theres also the issue of food supply.

Imagine the amount of food it would need to consume on a daily basis to keep its size class.

It couldnt possibly be the case.

Thats amassiveamount of food.

Would a shark of that size even bother with prey that small?

Later in the film, we find out that there are actually two megalodons on the loose.

The group captures a megalodon, ties it up on a boat, and thinks thats it.

But then, themeg breaches, grabs the smaller meg, and capsizes the boat.

Could a shark of that size breach out of the water and get onto a boat?

Im not sure how big the boat was, but maybe, probably.

They dont just come breaching out of the water and attacking you on a boat.

They want to see, What is this?

Theyre a lot more cautious than they are these vindictive predators.

I cant imagine a shark could actually follow something out of the water onto a boat.

Ive never heard of anything like that.

In the big climax, Jonas kills the meg.

He injects poison into its eye, and cuts its belly open, causing it to bleed out.

Could you poison a megalodon likethat, and would sharksreallyswarm a seriously injured, but massive predator that quickly?

[Sharks] have a nictitating membrane, so they would probably close that nictitating membrane.

Possibly, but it sounds like this shark was what, kind of laying there?

And the other thing is, this animal would need to be in the water longer.

Do sharks eat sharks?

Obviously yes, and sharks like sharks particularly white sharks.

Theyre definitely attracted to shark livers and things of that nature from other sharks.

But theres just not enough sharks in the ocean for it to be instantaneous like that.

If the animals still alive, do sharks [prey on the] weak and wounded?

But a size class scenario where you have like a 90-foot shark that still was alive?

I dont see that happening.

Once it dies, for sure.

Now, has it evolved during the last 2.3 million years?

But I dont necessarily think that wed be on their menu particularly.

Would it be opportunistic for them to come after us?

Would I want to meet a meg?
