Just because you could now shoot a film on an iPhone doesnt necessarily mean that youshould.

Take Steven Soderberghs Kafkaesque new thriller,Unsane.

Soderbergh has always been a filmmaker willing to try new narrative techniques and experiment with next-wave technology.

ButUnsaneis a lousy-looking film.

Theres no getting around it.

To be fair, this is all meant to reflect the main characters disorientation and anxiety.

Still, its not very subtle, and its so overdone that it borders on self-parody.

Making matters worse, the story is shockingly thin and predictable.

She protests that she doesnt belong there, first with reason then violence, but its no use.

Shes trapped in a waking nightmare and fed daily cocktails of drugs by Nurse Ratched types.

Soderbergh and his writers, Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, could have done atonmore with this is-she-or-isnt-she?
