Tech writer Andy Baioquestionedthe companys explanation on Twitter, noting, Im deeply skeptical this was an accident.
Myspace launched in 2003 and became the most visited website in the U.S. in 2006.
The site currently ranks around number 2,000 in terms of U.S. web traffic.
Still, Myspace retained a number of devoted users, many of whom used the site to follow musicians.
Representatives for Myspace have not responded to EWs request for comment.
