It wasnt that I didnt want to, but I wasnt looking for anything like this.

She wrote to me and Todd.

Its a smaller cast, and its rather contained in size.

A Kid Like Jake

But quite honestly what I was so drawn to was the way Daniel wrote dialogue between characters.

Ive certainly heard from other parents whove said weve had that argument.

Thats just a good writer; he has an ear for the way humans talk to each other.

It answered the question of, Why do this now?

But my desire to do it was just the way he wrote people talking.

This is over four years ago now when Jenette Kahn first sent us the material.

Very few things were easy about it.

Not in a bad way it was always a joyous trip.

Its still a real struggle to try and make a movie.

When we wrappedJake, the first thing I said was, Never again.

This is so hard.

Then we had a transgender director in Silas Howard who brought his wealth of life experiences with him.

Its all just changing rapidly.

Aware but not even sure of what were aware of is actually sitting in our midst.

In some ways, the movie beautifully doesnt answer that in that specific way.

Its not a film that wraps up and you understand the future of this kid called Jake.

We got a long immediately.

I think thats frequently a way to connect.

Unless theres an exceptional circumstance, I dont particularly struggle with lines that much.

We only needed one day.

As you could tell from watching us, he did a lot of moving with us.

It really encapsulated the biggest reason I wanted to do the movie at all.

It just doesnt matter.

You are openly gay, but youre playing a straight parent here.

This happens to be about gender fluidity.

This happens to possibly be a transgender issue; we dont know for sure.

Thats the beauty of what Daniel did.

It takes another shroud of mystery off something that may or may not seem foreign to people.
