It was really interesting, and creatively a really fulfilling thing to do.

It posed challenges that Ive never encountered in 20 some odd years of doing this.

One challenge shedidntencounter was the stifling of creativity.

We definitely played with that specific historical accuracy.

Most cases, in a Coen brothers movie, youre trying to downplay the beauty of somebody.

In this case, I was trying to amplify what a nice couple they made.

That they do, if only briefly.

It was my own little way to insert some romance, because Im a romantic.

As far as fabrics, Zophres employed wool, and some cotton.

I used only wool because we were trying to indicate a colder climate.

That in mind, Zophres puts high value on texture.

The looming process in those days was much heavier.

And in effect, it looked much different than modern clothing.

For Carter, who was previously nominated in the category forAmistadandMalcolm X, having three feels really good.

It feels like I chose the right thing for me.

And being nominated forBlack Panther, specifically?

Its such an important film, she continues.

It made such a mark and I love the costumes myself.

For the fans, Im just so proud that it got recognized by the Academy as well.

But, it feels like a home run.

Home run indeed just look at the sleek Black Panther suit.

It honored women, it honored the female form, but it didnt exploit it.

Rather, Coogler wanted to celebrate the talents of the warriors, wanted to ground them in reality.

And in that way, we lowered them to the ground, we gave them a split-toe boot.

Thats whats exciting about it, and I do have a go at vary it as much as possible.

Also appealing was Lanthimos originality.

He did surprise me by showing me a lot of period accurate reference some paintings and writing.

They were constructed with accuracy from the period as much as we could, but I used contemporary fabrics.

And she looked to modern style, too.

Theyre all separate and they all join together to make one dress but I mixed them all up.

Basically, It was sort of cleverly made to look like they had much vaster wardrobes than they did.

I always work with the cast.

In fact, collaboration is essential to the early stage of her process.

I always talk about my ideas.

Then we try things out, we try things on.

And then you know straight away whether something works or not.

We talked about the original and how we werent remaking the original at all.

Its the same character, different body, so there had to be similarities.

I love her arrival outfit because that was the hardest one to crack.

you might say that again!

I didnt know if it was going to work out and it actually does.

Powell drew upon real 1930s clothes for the grounded parts ofMary Poppins Returns.

I would always tend to embolden the female character.

Mary Poppins, of course, is a bold character.

In the film, shes headstrong, shes not afraid to speak her mind.

The same goes for Jane.

I deliberately put her into pants in sort of memory of her mother, the suffragette…

I wanted her to have freedom of movement and look like an emancipated woman.

Look at the end results, and its clear it works.

The reds of their hair are very different, Byrne says.

That’s a massive color componentthe juxtaposition of the two queens and part of the story.

you’re able to’t deny that as being the No.

1 thing informing your choice of color.

But not all Byrnes choices were vibrant.

You go for the colors that are available.

Also interesting is the way Elizabeth controlled her image.

She also carefully constructed her image upon meeting Mary in the film.
