“He’s vital,” says Garrett.

“He’s not going to be in every other scene.

He’s driving the crossover.”

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Can you walk me through the process of landing the role?

You know, one door opens, one closes, that whole thing.

So, I came in and read, and it was dummy sides and dummy names.

ARROW

You didn’t know who you were auditioning for.

You just knew it was a powerful DC entity.

In my mind, I was like, ‘Damn, are they bringing Darkseid?

Elseworlds, Part 1

Katie Yu/The CW

Is this Darkseid?’

I hit my reps up and I was like, “Who am I playing anyway?”

They saidCrisisMonitor, and I kind of stopped.

Then, we got the scripts and I was like, “Wow.”

The scripts blew my mind.

How did you come up with your portrayal of the character?

Did you re-read some stuff with the Monitor after landing the role?

I went back and re-readCrisis.

He kicked aroundTeen Titans, and he was a weapons dealer for villains.

It’s better for me because there has never been a live-action Monitor.

Who were some of the other heroes and villains that informed your interpretation of the character?

I looked at Darkseid’s presence.

I looked at Brainiac.

I look at theGuardians [of the Universe] fromGreen Lantern.

I tried to keep it DC.

I did read some Anti-Monitor stuff [since] they are brothers, but they’re nothing alike.

Was that a conscious decision?

He’s this all-powerful being.

This gun is doing all the yelling for you."

He doesn’t even have to fight when you think about it.

He didn’t have to say much.

That’s another person I looked at.

I just looked at powerful figures throughout film and just studied everything.

In the promos we see him working with John Deegan (Jeremy Davies).

Is he an antagonist in the Arrowverse’s interpretation of the character?

Like I said, he did bad things for a good cause in the comic books.

I know where you’re coming from, but that’s the wrong way of going about it."

To me, that wasThanos inAvengers: Infinity War.

What was it like putting on the costume for the first time?

It’s very comic book accurate.

I kind of got choked up a little bit.

It took a few weeks to make it.

Wardrobe did a fantastic job, but we had to do it in increments.

When I looked in the mirror, I had that “wow” moment.

I want to hold my own."

Like are you kidding me?

I was watching this guy when I was in high school!

It was surreal, but it was intimidating.

There was a lot going on.

To me, that’s living.
